Hoverboards Banned in New York: are segways now Illegal?

For many people this Holiday season, getting a Hoverboard is at the top of the list. You may have been waiting patiently to receive your gift but now new laws in NYC may prohibit you from using the self balancing scooter. Are hoveboards Really Illegal?

This past week, New York Police Departments 26th, precinct sent out a tweet saying that these devices are illegal to operate under NYC admin code 19-176.2 in the areas of Morningside Heights and West Harlem.

The NYC have not issued a further statement regarding the ban and have not provided us with any more insight into the matter. The tweet has since been deleted, adding to further confusion.

The Good News

The good news for anyone still looking to buy a hover board is that the NYPD did not do their research on the laws they themselves enforce. If we look closely at the aforementioned admin code, hoverboards do not fit the description of a motorized vehicle since they do not have handles.

So, if you were worried about being stopped by law enforcement and facing hefty fines while enjoying riding your mini segway - worry no more. Remember to exercise proper safety precautions while using a hoverboard and stay safe.
